With winter upon us, many households across the UK will now be regularly using their central heating to keep warm. But with energy prices still soaring, homeowners will be looking for ways they can save on their heating costs.
There are many ways to keep warm in winter without increasing energy usage including wrapping up warm, upgrading windows and installing equipment such as programmable room thermostats and thermostatic radiator valves.
However, what many do not know is that their old boiler could be costing them hundreds in inefficiencies and a greater risk of breakdown, being the single biggest contributor to their energy costs.
In our latest blog post, we explain how upgrading your inefficient boiler to a new A-rated model could save you up to £840 on your annual energy bill.
How Much Can a New Boiler Save Me?
Whilst replacing your boiler might seem like an expensive way of reducing energy bills, it can be the most effective in the long term.
Data from Energy Saving Trust shows that those living in detached houses could save up to £840 on their annual energy bills by switching from an old gas boiler to an A-rated unit.
Property Type | Bungalow | Detached House | Flat (mid floor) | Semi Detached House | Mid Terrace House |
Savings | £445 | £840 | £230 | £540 | £420 |
Average savings when upgrading from an old gas boiler (G rated) to an A-rated boiler with a programmer, room thermostat and TRVs.
With new boilers available from Gas Safe for as little as £1,590, it will take less than 2 years to fully recoup the costs through energy savings if living in a detached house.
More Energy Efficient
The key reason that a new A-rated boiler can save so much on your energy bills is that they are far more efficient than older models.
All modern boilers are condensing, which means they recover significantly more heat from exhaust flue gas and use this to heat up the central heating water, this minimises the amount of heat that escapes wasted from the system.
Part of the reason that modern boilers are so much more efficient is because of the Government’s Boiler Plus legislation introduced in 2018. This means that all new and replacement gas boilers installed in homes in England must have an ErP efficiency of at least 92%, ErP is a measure of how efficient boilers are.
If you aren’t sure how efficient your boiler is, take a look on the side of the unit for a sticker which shows how efficient the boiler is on a scale of A to G. If you can’t find the sticker, search for your model number online or get in touch with a heating engineer.
Lower Risk of Breakdown
Not only do modern units run far more efficiently than older units, but they are also less prone to breakdown which results in costly repairs.
Boiler breakdown can be extremely disruptive, especially in the middle of winter when temperatures fall below zero. With an older boiler, it’s often more economical to replace the unit with a brand new boiler rather than spending money on repairs.
With boilers now being switched on for winter, they can be much more likely to breakdown, particularly if they are old and haven’t been used throughout the year. To prevent any issues with your boiler, check out our guide for ensuring your boiler is ready for winter.
Add Value To Your Home
If you are considering selling or renting out your home, upgrading your boiler to a new efficient unit can increase the value of the property.
In fact, research by Go Compare has found that installing a new boiler is one of the best renovations you can make to improve the value of your home, with an estimated increase of 4% to the value of the property.
This means that in a home with a value of £250,000, the installation of a new boiler would increase the value of the home to £260,000; an increase of £10,000.
